Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of using a sunbed?

Using a sunbed, you can control your level of exposure to UV light. UV rays omitted from a sunbed stimulate the tanning process, can help with acne, and other skin problems as well as increase levels of vitamin D.

How long can I use a sunbed for?

UV exposure times should be adjusted to suit your skin type.

Skin TypeSkin Colour
IPale whiteTanning not recommended
IIWhite to light beigeShort sessions only 2-3 times a week
IIIBeigeCapable of building up to 3-4 sessions a week
IVLight brown4-5 sessions a week
VModerate brownRarely burns – tans to dark brown
VIDark brown or blackHardly ever burns

There should only be maximum 1 session in any 24-hour period for any skin type.

What is a sunbed session?

A session is a length of time exposed on a sunbed, which should vary in length considering the tanning power of the sunbed and the users skin type. EU safe tanning regulations require all sunbeds to have a maximum irradiance level of 0.3w/m2, yet the various models of sunbeds do give out different levels of UVA/UVB, therefore you should always read the tanning instructions on the sunbed before use.

There should only be maximum 1 session in any 24-hour period for any skin type.

What are the running costs for a home sunbed?

The electricity used per minute on a sunbed varies depending on the model of sunbed you purchase and your current energy rates. Using the current UK capped rate of 34p per kw per hr (February 2023) our low-energy electronic home sunbeds cost 4p-12p per 10-minute session. The 160w sunbeds are roughly 12p-28p per 10-minute session.
